Administration on Aging

The Administration on Aging (AoA) is the Federal agency responsible for advancing the concerns and interests of older people and their caregivers. AoA works with and through the Aging Services Network to promote the development of a comprehensive and coordinated system of home and community-based long-term care that is responsive to the needs and preferences of older people and their family caregivers. AoA is part of the Department of Health and Human Services and is headed by the Assistant Secretary for Aging, who reports directly to the Secretary.

Administration on Developmental Disabilities

The Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) ensures that individuals with developmental disabilities and their families participate in the design of and have access to culturally competent services, supports, and other assistance and opportunities that promotes independence, productivity, and integration and inclusion into the community. ADD does not provide direct consumer support or financial assistance. ADD provides funding, monitoring, and policy guidance to it's programs Nationwide. To obtain services, contact the program offices in your state.

National Council on Disability

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is a small, independent federal agency charged with advising the President, Congress, and other federal agencies regarding policies, programs, practices, and procedures that affect people with disabilities. First established as a small advisory Council within the Department of Education in 1978, NCD was transformed into an independent agency in 1984 and is comprised of a team of fifteen Senate-confirmed Presidential appointees, an Executive Director appointed by the Chairman, and eleven, full-time professional staff.

The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH provides leadership and direction to programs designed to improve the health of the Nation by supporting research: in the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and cure of human diseases; in the processes of human growth and development; in the biological effects of environmental contaminants in the understanding of mental, addictive and physical disorders; in directing programs for the collection, dissemination, and exchange of information in medicine and health, including the development and support of medical libraries and the training of medical librarians and other health information specialists. Compromised of 27 seperate Institutes and Centers, NIH is located in Bethesda, Maryland. NIH provides information and materials to assist the general public, professional public, and media representatives in understanding the new and developing health advances from the NIH.

American Academy of Pain Management

The American Academy of Pain Management is the largest Pain Organization in the United States. Academy Membership is 6,000 strong and growing. The Academy provides credentialing, accreditation of facilities, networking opportunities, continuing education, quality publications and an annual clinical meeting. It is the goal of the American Academy of Pain Management to bring together the many professionals who work with individuals in pain and to assist in the creation of quality services for those individuals. The intent of the American Academy of Pain Management is to be inclusionary and not restrictive to any specialty.

American Hospital Association

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is the national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. Close to 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks, other providers of care and 37,000 individual members come together to form the AHA. Through our representation and advocacy activities, AHA ensures that members' perspectives and needs are heard and addressed in national health policy development, legislative and regulatory debates, and judicial matters. Our advocacy efforts include the legislative and executive branches and include the legislative and regulatory arenas. Founded in 1898, the AHA provides education for health care leaders and is a source of information on health care issues and trends.

American Medical Association

The American Medical Association (AMA), founded in 1847, is the professional organization for physicians in the United States. The AMA disseminates information on issues important to physicians, patients, and the nation's health. The AMA is active in legislative issues and in setting standards for medical practice and education. Other activities include counseling on practice management problems, policy studies in a variety of areas, a medical library for physicians, publications, and meetings and conferences. The AMA library has a collection of over 60,000 volumes and 2,500 journals, and has direct computer access to the National Library of Medicine's database.

American Society for Deaf Children

The American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC) was founded in 1967 as a parent-helping-parent organization. Today, ASDC is a national, independent non-profit organization whose purpose is providing support, encouragement, and information to families raising children who are deaf or hard of hearing. ASDC supplies the information and support families request to ensure that their decisions and actions are based on up-to-date and accurate knowledge.

Federation for Children with Special Needs

The Federation for Children with Special Needs provides information, support, and assistance to parents of children with disabilities, their professional partners, and their communities. The Federation is committed to listening to and learning from families, and encouraging full participation in community life by all people, especially those with disabilities. The Federation promotes active and informed participation of parents of children with disabilities in shaping, implementing, and evaluating public policy that affects them. The Federation believes in the power of parents helping parents and has infused a proven model of peer support throughout all its work. Most Federation staff members are parents or family members of children with disabilities and people with disabilities.

National Alliance on Mental Illness

National Association of Insurance Commissioners

Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is a voluntary organization of the chief insurance regulatory officials of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories. National Senior Citizens Law Center

The National Senior Citizens Law Center is a non-profit organization whose principal mission is to protect the rights of low-income older adults. Through advocacy, litigation, and the education and counseling of local advocates, they seek to ensure the health and economic security of those with limited income and resources, and access to the courts for all. Since 1972, the National Senior Citizens Law Center has worked to promote the independence and well-being of low-income elderly and persons with disabilities, especially women, people of color, and other disadvantaged minorities. They work to preserve and strengthen Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and SSI, benefits programs that allow low-income older adults to live with dignity and independence. In addition, they work for greater access to the federal courts for all.
