Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The Office of the Surgeon General, under the direction of the Surgeon General, oversees the operations of the 6,500-member Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and provides support for the Surgeon General in the accomplishment of her other duties. The Office is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Surgeon General serves as America's Doctor by providing Americans the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation

The American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation joined forces in May of 2005 to create a healthier generation by addressing one of the nation's leading public health threats -- childhood obesity. Along with co-leader Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, the Alliance works to positively affect the places that can make a difference to a child's health: homes, schools, restaurants, doctor's offices and communities.

Shape Up America!

Shape Up America! is a non-profit national initiative to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating and increased physical activity for weight management and disease prevention. Founded by former U.S. Surgeon C. Everett Koop in 1994, Shape Up America! relies on a broad coalition of industry, medical, health, nutrition and physical fitness experts to develop and communicate information to the public and to health care professionals. It has three broad objectives: promote a new understanding by Americans of the health importance of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and increasing physical activity; provide science-based information on the assessment and treatment of obesity; and increase cooperation among national and community organizations committed to advancing healthy weight and increased physical activity as major public health priorities. The Shape Up America! website--www.shapeup.org--is designed to communicate with the public, health care professionals, educators and the media.

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly)

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a, nonprofit, weight-loss support and wellness education organization. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS promotes successful, affordable weight management with a philosophy that combines healthy eating, regular exercise, wellness information, awards and recognition, and support from others at weekly chapter meetings. TOPS is comprised of men, women, and children age 7 and older, with about 170,000 members in nearly 10,000 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge.
