FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition

The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) is one of five product-oriented centers of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The mission of CFSAN is to promote and protect the public health and economic interest by ensuring that the food supply is safe, nutritious, wholesome, and honest and that cosmetics are safe and properly labeled. In order to accomplish its mission CFSAN ensures that consumers are fully informed about the food and cosmetic products they buy; protects the public health through scientific research in food and nutrition; ensures accurate labeling of food; and educates consumers about diet and nutrition.

Food and Nutrition Information Center

The Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) is a leader in on-line global nutrition information. Located at the National Agricultural Library (NAL) of USDA, the FNIC Web site contains over 2500 links to current and reliable nutrition information. Over the years, FNIC has continued to grow with added services and products to meet the needs of our users for reliable nutrition information. A major milestone occurred in 1995 with the launching of the FNIC Web site, greatly expanding FNIC's reach. In addition to the web site overall, our most popular products are our Resource Lists and our Databases of Educational Materials. Our most popular services include our Ask A Question and lending services. Our special projects target specific user groups or subject areas.

Food and Nutrition Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture

This division of the USDA is responsible for the administration of all USDA's nutrition assistance programs -- Food Stamps; WIC Program /Farmers' Market; Child Nutrition; Team Nutrition; and Food Distribution. National Institute of Food and Agriculture - NIFA

NIFA's unique mission is to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, and communities by supporting research, education, and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations. NIFA doesn't perform actual research, education, and extension but rather helps fund it at the state and local level and provides program leadership in these areas. NIFA's two key mechanisms for accomplishing its mission of "advancing knowledge" are: •National program leadership - To help states identify and meet research, extension, and education priorities in areas of public concern that affect agricultural producers, small business owners, youth and families, and others. •Federal assistance - To provide annual formula grants to land-grant universities and competitively granted funds to researchers in land-grant and other universities.

Calorie Control Council

The Calorie Control Council, established in 1966, is an international association representing the low-calorie and diet food and beverage industry. The Council seeks to provide an effective channel of communication among its members, the public, and government officials, and to assure that scientific, medical, and other pertinent research and information is developed and made available to all interested parties. The Council has sponsored numerous studies on low-calorie sweeteners, foods, and beverages. It supports the availability of aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and acesulfame K and the approvals of alitame and cyclamate. The Council also supports the continued availability of current fat substitutes and caloric dietary sweeteners. The approval of additional safe low-caloric sweeteners, fat substitutes, and other dietary ingredients is encouraged.

Food and Nutrition Board

The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), established in 1940, advises public agencies on implications of nutrition research for food safety, nutritional status and health, food technology, food resources, and food processing. FNB identifies needed research and interprets research findings in the interest of public welfare. Separate committees have conducted projects in the fields of food protection, food consumption patterns, international nutrition, meat and poultry inspection, diet and health, nutrition education in medical schools, carcinogenicity of sweeteners, maternal and child nutrition, and water treatment chemicals. FNB has established the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) and has conducted surveys of food additives. The Board has also developed guidelines for nutrient fortification of foods, recommendations for maternal and infant nutrition, and specifications of identity and purity for food chemicals. The FNB is not a public information source, but provides scientific assessments regarding food and nutrition issues through its publications and reports.

Gluten Intolerance Group of North America

The Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) is an organization for supporting patients living with from gluten-sensitive diseases (celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, and gluten intolerances), in order to live health lives. The Group is administered by health care professionals who are able to advise its members on diet. The Group holds provides education materials at no charge from its Web site and holds events such as education conferences. The Group disseminates information on celiac disease research, product and drug information, and advocacy efforts. Membership is by fee. GIG is a touchstone for researchers to gather patients and information on gluten intolerance. GIG affiliates are located throughout the states.

NIH National Kidney Disease Education Program

National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) is an initiative of the National Institutes of Health, designed to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by kidney disease and its complications. NKDEP aims to raise awareness of the seriousness of kidney disease, the importance of testing those at high risk (those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney failure), and the availability of treatment to prevent or slow kidney failure.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation

Cleveland Clinic, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a not-for-profit multispecialty academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. Cleveland Clinic was founded in 1921 by four renowned physicians with a vision of providing outstanding patient care based upon the principles of cooperation, compassion and innovation. About 2,000 full-time salaried physicians and researchers and 7,600 nurses at Cleveland Clinic represent more than 100 medical specialties and subspecialties. In addition to its main campus, Cleveland Clinic operates nine regional hospitals in Northeast Ohio, Cleveland Clinic Florida, the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas and Cleveland Clinic Canada. In 2008, there were more than 4.2 million visits throughout the Cleveland Clinic health system and 165,000 hospital admissions. Patients came for treatment from every state and from more than 80 countries.
